Yukon Blonde – “Wind Blows”

With the Winter Olympics in full swing, and actually coming to a close this weekend, it seemed like a good idea to feature a band from Vancouver. I love their self-titled debut CD, which was released on the 9th in Canada but won’t reach the US until March, but “Wind Blows” was an immediate favorite of mine. The song starts out sounding an awful lot like the Fleet Foxes, but quickly deviates from there; instead following in the footsteps of late 70’s classic rock. Which means only one thing…this is a band that both you and your dad can enjoy!! Oh happy day!! If you want to check them out live they’ll be playing SXSW next month and eventually making their way to LA on April 1st.

The Maccabees – “Seventeen Hands”

I love everything about this song. I find the singer’s voice to be very intriguing and feel like it easily finds its place within the music. The guitar and drums pick up and slow down at the right times and move the song along perfectly. When I hear it I want to take up jogging.

In the morning this sounds a bit less appealing, but I love this song. The intro is hilarious and this is the song I listen to on the way to da clubs hah!!

HTRK – “Fascinator”

Nothing like the death of a favorite author and disillusionment with the current political climate to make me crawl back into my big black goth hole.  Australia’s HTRK (pronounced “hate rock”) brings me back to the early singles by The Sisters of Mercy and Play Dead.  Faith by The Cure comes to mind as well.  “Fascinator” is from the band’s most recent effort entitled, Marry Me Tonight.

Spoon – “Got Nuffin”

I imagine this would be the perfect song to listen to while running. Of course, I wouldn’t know if that is true or not, so let’s just say that it is great for driving (really fast) in your car…something I am much more familiar with. The pulsing bass and frantic but sporadic guitar sections fit together perfectly and are never indulgent. I also love the sharp fade at the end of the song on the album version. Unfortunately, the clip below is from a different version, so you’ll just have to go check out the new album, Transference, which is an early favorite for best of 2010 (even though it’s only January).

For all the Chuck fans out there, you heard this song on last weeks episode (Ep. 304: “Chuck vs. Operation Awesome”). It’s a really fun placement that you can check out on Hulu when you get a chance.

DeYarmond Edison – “Bones”

Justin Vernon’s old band.  I love the laziness of the song. The choral repetition of “and I’m so far from not caring” that closes it out makes me listen over and over and over again.

The Drums – “Submarine”

Considering that the band’s influences come straight from my record collection, this is super easy to get behind. This song is as singable and as catchy as they come. Not to mention the fact, that they list The Wake as their primary musical muse. I remember the day in 1987 when I walked into Earwaves in Milwaukee and bought this beautiful piece of The Wake vinyl on Factory Records with its minimalist Peter Saville looking grey cover. One of my most favorite musical finds ever.

Land of Talk – “It’s Okay”

I have been borderline obsessed with this song for quite some time. It is perfectly sad, depressing and hopeful. I love the raw beauty of the vocals and the honesty in the lyrics. Hadn’t heard it in awhile and then stumbled upon the music video (directed by WeWereMonkeys) and got sucked in again. Get ready to cry…

Enjoy!
