Nothing like the death of a favorite author and disillusionment with the current political climate to make me crawl back into my big black goth hole. Australia’s HTRK (pronounced “hate rock”) brings me back to the early singles by The Sisters of Mercy and Play Dead. Faith by The Cure comes to mind as well. “Fascinator” is from the band’s most recent effort entitled, Marry Me Tonight.
Considering that the band’s influences come straight from my record collection, this is super easy to get behind. This song is as singable and as catchy as they come. Not to mention the fact, that they list The Wake as their primary musical muse. I remember the day in 1987 when I walked into Earwaves in Milwaukee and bought this beautiful piece of The Wake vinyl on Factory Records with its minimalist Peter Saville looking grey cover. One of my most favorite musical finds ever.
Last night, the Chop Shop crew was in attendance for the much anticipated The Twilight Saga: New Moon movie premiere. While the worldwide release of the film is just days away, we have a first look from the folks responsible for the fantastic music featured in the film and on the soundtrack.
Here are a few photos and highlights from last nights festivities:
Volturi Eyes
Alex: “So great to see (and hear) all of the fans from our arriving car. It was sad to disappoint them with Team Chop Shop rather than Edward or Jacob. I loved working on this movie and enjoyed watching the finished film. Yea Chris Weitz!”
John: “The cast of New Moon was so humble and were very gracious towards their fans. I was totally impressed. Weird seeing mohawk guy and wheel chair guy from Glee there. Even weirder was seeing 50 Cent and Richie Sambora. My highlight was seeing Larry David at the after party. It was surreal, like I was in an episode of Curb or something. Another highlight was getting to the theater and having Jennifer Love Hewitt ask if I know Anya and then proceeding to tell me how amazing she is.”
Kasey: “Limo. Red Carpet. Anya Marina Reporting Live. NEW MOON SCREENING! Music via CHOP SHOP! Hammer Museum After Party. Red Robed Servers. Real Live Wolves. Amazing Night.”
Brittany: “I loved walking into the Hammer museum, grabbing a highly anticipated glass of wine, and turning around only to see two of the most beautiful wolves right behind me. The whole event was absolutely stunning and completely unforgettable.”
Ginger: “I would have to say one of my highlights was getting out of the car and onto the red carpet and being immersed into the New Moon frenzy. I really felt the impact of the film at that moment”
Also, soundtrack artist Anya Marina co-hosted the MySpace New Moon Premiere red carpet show last night and did a fantastic job! You can see some footage from the broadcast below.
This definitely qualifies as the longest ‘Song of the Day’…clocking in at a healthy 18:06! It is instrumental, it is ambient, it is experimental, and it is from Portland. What more do you need to know?
If you do want to know more, check out their blog…or their other blog. Why have only one, when you could have two?
Here at Chop Shop, we operate like a two headed monster. Music supervision on one side of the office…hip indie record label on the other. Running point on the latter, is none other than John Rubeli. John has been in the music industry for quite some time, most notably as VP of A&R at Atlantic Records. So it’s no big surprise that he has a solid taste in music.
So listen up and enjoy…here is John’s Song of the Day:
