End Of Summer Playlist

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

All good things must come to an end…and the same goes for Summer 2010. It was a fantastic one, but fall is approaching and we all know the best way to cope with the change in seasons is with an old fashioned mix-tape from the Chop Shop.

Now, crafting a playlist is no easy feat…chances are you have worked hard on your own in the past and came up with varied results. Maybe you went a little too heavy on the rock, or didn’t have enough songs people knew, or maybe you forgot the one track that would have been perfect. We’ve all been there. On the flipside, isn’t it a beautiful feeling when your mixtape hits the mark right on? You had just the right balance of indie cool and pop with a little hip-hop sprinkled in. Maybe you found that one song that no one has heard before that everyone asks about. Anyways…I could go on…

So as a special little treat for you and as a celebration of us passing 5,000 followers on Twitter, we had everyone in our office contribute one current song that they are digging as well as one classic song that has been with them for awhile for an ultimate End Of Summer Playlist. Maybe we hit the mark…maybe we didn’t…but at least your ears will have something to do for a few minutes.

Thanks for hanging around with us! Enjoy!

End Of Summer Playlist by Chop Shop Music

Breakdown:

#1 ) Baths – “Plea” (John – Current)
21 year old San Fernando Valley native Will Wiesenfeld invokes Boston’s Tom Scholz in the form of his own laptop recordings.   But 25 years later, bedroom has replaced basement.  Computer has replaced tape.  Beats have replaced guitars.  A classically trained pianist, Wiesenfeld has repurposed his rigid musical training and left it to creative chance.  Invoking John Cage’s musical happenstance, what flows in and out of the laptop is pure electronic pop magic.  Cerulean is the name of the debut album, which has breathed life into my often anaemic ears.

#2) Elvis Costello & The Attractions – “Beyond Belief” (Alex – Classic)

#3) Dag För Dag – “Hands And Feet” (Matt – Current)
My love affair with Scandinavian music continues…

#4) Peter Gabriel – “Solsbury Hill” (Kasey – Classic)
This song has been on repeat in my brain the past week. I love the last verse, it is so empowering to me.

#5) The Head And The Heart – “Lost In My Mind” (Kasey – Current)
My new favorite band. I love the natural feel, I love the harmonies, and I love this song.

#6) David Bowie – “Somebody Up There Likes Me” (Ginger – Classic)
I love the sax in this song which is what caught my attention in the first place and it also feels so nostalgic. It brings such a happy, drive-off-into-the-sunset kind of feel.

#7) The Acorn – “Restoration” (Alex – Current)

#8) Eminem ft. Lil Wayne – “No Love” (Brittany – Current)
This album has not left my cd player since the day it came out, and this song has been played more times than anyone wants to know.  Lil Wayne’s verse is flat out amazing, but Eminem’s wording and lyrics are well beyond the rest of the music that is happening today.  The sting in his words and the point that he always finds a way to get across, no matter how he has to put it, never fails to hit home.  He is so talented and this song is so powerful in what it has to say that I can’t stop listening to it.  Eminem is a genius.

#9) Dragonette – “Volcano” (Justin – Current)
So I figure there’s two ways to end your summer.  You could host a chill party with some of your close friends, listen to music like “Fazon” from 70s psychedelic rock band Sopwith Camel, take in all of it’s jazzy goodness, and prepare yourself for the onslaught of fall and all the holidays ahead, OR you could throw one last huge bash.  The song “Volcano” by Dragonette would be the perfect way to kick off said bash.  Ever since we got this song in I haven’t been able to get it out of my head.  Good luck!

#10) Patti Smith Group – “Dancing Barefoot” (Brittany – Classic)
When I turned 19 I got a record player with built in speakers as a gift, so I went to the thrift store to buy some albums and the Patti Smith Group album “Wave” was my first random purchase.  I got home and heard “Dancing Barefoot” and I played it as loud as I could on repeat for weeks and weeks until I blew the speakers.  Her voice has a powerful and haunting quality that lends itself so well to the lyrics that talk about a mistress who is falling for the wrong person.  My favorite part of the song is the ending where the song tails out and her voice is doubled up…it is like it is spinning out of control.  It is a great moment in female punk rock history and one of my favorite songs of all time.

#11) Boston – “More Than A Feeling” (John – Classic)
For a long time I’ve felt that this song helped mark the beginning of alternative rock.  Released in 1976, this track treated guitars and harmonies unlike the more progressive, blues rock at the time.  Rock had become pure pop chemistry and Tom Scholz took on the role of mad scientist.  Working alone in his basement, Scholz crafted his D.I.Y. sound perfecting microphone techniques and analogue vs. digital technologies.  He recorded relying purely on his genius and autocracy.  Every time I hear the big riff in “Smells Like Teen Spirit” I hear this song.  When I listen to Billy Corgan’s gigantic, layered guitars, I hear this song.  Every time it comes on the radio I smile and air guitar.  Who doesn’t?

#12) Greg Laswell – “Off I Go” (Ginger – Current)
I’m always transfixed when I hear his music, period.

#13) Sopwith Camel – “Fazon” (Justin – Classic)

#14) U2 – “Out Of Control” (Matt – Classic)
I love the passion and raw energy of young Bono and U2. The Edge is a genius too.

Empire Of The Sun – “Walking On A Dream”

This is the ultimate summer song…great to listen to with a piña colada in hand, laying underneath the swaying palm trees poolside. Nothing beats the feeling that this song captures.

Sailor – “Jacaranda”

The very first time I heard this song it was like I had been shuttled off into another place and time.  It has a dreamy feel to it that allows the listener to be drawn into the song, and makes for a very relaxing two and a half minutes.  I find the actual musicians to be amazing…so many lost gems from the 70s.

COACH-wheel

Oh Coachella…we miss you so! It was only a week ago that we were in your midst, braving the traffic, hot sun, half naked patrons, and a mangy little squirrel inside of our rental home. Here are some of our reflections and personal highlights from the 3-day adventure in the musical heaven that is and was Coachella (AKA Squirrelchella) 2010.

Echo & The Bunnymen blew me away with their overall sound and presence…Will Sergeant was the star of the show for me, especially during “The Cutter”.  I absolutely loved Ian McCulloch’s stage presence and how he commanded the stage with very little to say in between each song.  The one thing I do recall him saying was “This next song is the best song ever written” and then he played “The Killing Moon”.  I can’t say that I disagree.  Every time I hear that song I feel like I have been transported to another time on another planet, and I love every minute of it.

So mine is Thom Yorke surprise surprise!  We walked up to the outside stage an hour early to get a good glimpse of the super huge Thom Yorke that chose to rock the smaller stage instead of the main one. To my surprise he was performing with Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers who was playing bass with him wearing a white minutemen shirt, appropriately, and ripping his bass to shreds. Thom York played the entire Eraser album and killed my two favorite songs, “Black Swan” and “Skip Divided” which happen to be the most depressing songs on the planet because they are so identifiable lyrically. I was completely consumed by his lyrics and how they transcended me back to where I was when I was listening to this album when it came out. It’s rare that I can get lost in a performance, let alone in the lyrics. Definitely a winner!

I have two Coachella highlights.

1. Seeing Florence And The Machine. I’ve missed two of her shows here in Los Angeles, and couldn’t wait to see her play on Sunday. I even went as far as to get to her set early and stand my ground in a tent of dirty, sweaty Coachella-goers. The sound wasn’t fantastic in the tent but Florence proved to be a great stage presence and her voice was awesome. Dog Days and Raise It Up were my favorites. Also, Nate from the Cold War Kids coming out to sing one of my favorite songs “Hospital Beds” was a highlight.

2. Watching Temper Trap mid-day was pretty amazing. The band sounded perfect and Dougy’s vocals were spot on.  It was one of those magical festival moments; “Down River” and “Resurrection” playing, The Outdoor Theater, the heat of the sun, and being amongst friends hearing great music.

Man it’s hard to pin down just one favorite act among the many good ones I saw this weekend, but the crisp and clear sound of Phoenix definitely sticks out in my mind.  I think there’s something to be said about the feeling I got listening them play “Love Like a Sunset” as the sun literally set behind the amazing Outdoor Theatre stage.  It was electrifying.  The crowd was into it, I was way into it, and some Phoenix was just what I needed after the long Coachella weekend.  Great job, Phoenix!

This was my first Coachella experience…and I miss it already. I seriously cannot wait to go back. One of my favorite moments happened during the Spoon set on the last day when my wife, Beth (who is not much of a show goer or indie rock fan) looked at me without prompting and said, “I like this band”. My heart melted and I was reassured that I had indeed married the right gal.

The other day I decided to take a stroll around my neighborhood…a place that I should have explored much more and that has so much to offer in the way of shopping and vintage furniture.  Silver Lake.  Just blocks from my house, a small yet perfect shop called Yolk sits tucked into the row of shops on Silver Lake Blvd.  I had gone inside a few times before, but I never remember it having so many cutting edge and modern things for your home.  Things that you can’t find anywhere else.  I fell in love with a lime green plastic salad bowl that I know would be perfect for any outdoor parties or bbq’s that I am so excited to have this summer.  I also wanted to leave with a set of modern, colorful coasters…a handy lime green cutting board…a new duvet cover…pillows for my couch…plastic placemats with bright mid-century designs…I could go on and on.  Also, in the back of the store they have an entire section for baby’s and young kids which looked like it had amazing strollers, cribs, clothing and everything else that comes along with raising a kid in an eco-conscious manner.  It is a perfect place to find a gift for someone who has everything!

Matt

Growing up I was a big baseball card collector (AKA nerd). I actually still have them all in boxes somewhere at my parents house. A few weeks ago Kasey bought me a ziplock bag of old 1990-91 Upper Deck cards from some random store near our office and I was immediately transported back to my childhood. I think I might have scared the others because I am very particular (AKA OCD) about how I go through and arrange my cards. Naturally, I ranked them in order of ‘Best Moustache’. Here is the winner:

“Inside The Shop” is a new series we are going to feature here on the Chop Shop Blog. It is an extension of Who We Are, but with a deeper look at the things we are into currently. I know it is hard to believe that we pay attention to anything outside of music, but hopefully you will find some interesting things here or at least have a good laugh. Let us know what you think.

Enjoy.

After watching every episode of Mad Men, I can’t help but to fall into the glamorization of the traditional cocktails (currently in love with the Manhattan: whiskey and sweet vermouth with a cherry, on the rocks), The vintage looking cocktail sets neatly placed in the offices at Sterling Cooper have become somewhat trendy, and after not having a substantial cocktail set in my place, I set out to look for one in the antique shops I love in the city of Orange.

As I was strolling along the isles of endless kitsch and developing ideas for more collections in which I don’t need (clown paintings, for one) I found this cocktail set glistening from a distance… All I need now is a mini bar and some matching glassware, which will be a whole other expedition. Cheers!

A gift made it’s way into the office the other day. One box of Girl Scout Cookies – Thin Mints. Girl Scout Cookie season is like an unexpected Christmas for me. I know it usually comes around once a year, but I never have a firm grasp of when.

And then a box appears.

Thin Mints immediately go into the freezer, there is no better way to eat them. My favorite ones are Samoas. I could eat an entire box of them in one sitting. I haven’t tasted their delight yet this year. Girl Scout Cookies are a food item where all healthy eating restrictions are instantly removed. Will power is thrown out the window.

I need Samoas. Must. Find. Samoas.

Since vampire’s have been so present in modern day pop culture, I thought I would go back to one of the most classic and influential vampire films from my childhood years.  “Fright Night”…I was 4 years old when it was first released. I remember watching this film over and over again as a kid thinking that Chris Sarandon was the most amazing man that had ever walked the planet.  His role as Jerry Dandridge in Fright Night, along with Roddy McDowall as Peter Vincent ‘The Great Vampire Killer’ made the movie timeless and still one of my favorite films ever made.  It is one of the first times I remember actually paying attention to the use of music in a film.  Ian Hunter’s “Good Man In A Bad Time”, Brad Fiedel’s “Come To Me”, Sparks “Armies Of The Night” and Evelyn “Champagne” King’s “Give It Up” were of the many highlights.  I strongly recommend you to purchase this dvd today so that you can watch it on repeat as much as possible.  Below are two of the best scenes in the film…

Matt

warrior-dash

I am so stoked for this. Some friends and I are going to be taking part of the SoCal Warrior Dash next month. Basically, it is a 3 mile obstacle course where you jump through fire, crawl through mud, and after you finish you get a beer and a warrior helmet. It doesn’t get much better than that! In preparation, I have been training my weak musicians body so I don’t totally embarrass myself. Hopefully I don’t pass out.

There are several dashes going on all over the states…check out www.warriordash.com for info.

The Maccabees – “Seventeen Hands”

I love everything about this song. I find the singer’s voice to be very intriguing and feel like it easily finds its place within the music. The guitar and drums pick up and slow down at the right times and move the song along perfectly. When I hear it I want to take up jogging.
